Job Description

Position Title: Post Graduate Teacher (PGT) – Biology

Position Overview

The Post Graduate Teacher (PGT) – Biology is responsible for delivering high-quality, engaging, and standards-aligned instruction to students in Grades 11 and 12 within a general education school setting. The incumbent will foster a student-centered learning environment, promote academic excellence, and uphold the ethical, legal, and professional standards of the teaching profession. The role requires a minimum of three years of teaching experience and a postgraduate qualification in Biology or a related field. This is a full-time, permanent position governed by a structured employment contract.

Instructional Approach

The PGT Biology teacher shall employ a learner-centered, inquiry-based pedagogical approach aligned with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) and relevant state education board guidelines. Instruction must emphasize conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and application of biological principles through laboratory-based learning, project work, and real-world problem-solving.

The teacher shall integrate technology in instruction, including digital simulations, e-learning platforms, and multimedia resources, to enhance student engagement and conceptual clarity. Lesson planning must be standards-based, differentiated to accommodate diverse learning styles, and responsive to formative and summative assessment data.

The incumbent is expected to maintain accurate lesson plans, instructional materials, and student records in accordance with school and regulatory policies. All instructional content must comply with the Right to Education (RTE) Act and relevant state education statutes.

Desired Competencies

The PGT Biology teacher must demonstrate the following competencies with evidence of sustained performance:

1. Subject Matter Expertise:
- Comprehensive knowledge of Class 11 and 12 Biology syllabus (NCERT/CBSE or state board equivalent).
- Ability to teach advanced topics including Genetics, Ecology, Human Physiology, Biotechnology, and Evolution with depth and accuracy.
- Familiarity with current developments in biological sciences and their integration into curriculum delivery.

2. Pedagogical Competence:
- Proficiency in active learning strategies, including inquiry-based and experiential learning.
- Skill in designing and conducting laboratory experiments in compliance with safety protocols (e.g., CBSE’s laboratory manual guidelines).
- Ability to use formative assessment tools such as quizzes, projects, presentations, and practical exams to monitor progress.

3. Classroom Management:
- Establish and maintain a structured, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment.
- Implement positive behavior support strategies in accordance with the school’s discipline policy.
- Ensure 100% attendance tracking and timely reporting of absenteeism to parents and administration.

4. Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
- Clear, articulate, and professional communication with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Ability to explain complex biological concepts in age-appropriate language.
- Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with the school leadership, subject department, and support staff.

5. Professional Ethics and Integrity:
- Uphold the principles of academic integrity; prevent and report any instances of plagiarism or malpractice.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records and school data.
- Adhere to the code of conduct prescribed by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) or relevant state education board.

6. Compliance and Legal Awareness:
- Ensure all instructional and assessment activities comply with the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009.
- Comply with the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, in all student interactions.
- Follow the guidelines of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) regarding teacher qualifications and professional development.

Classroom Environment

Minimum Requirements:
- Class size not exceeding 40 students per section.
- Availability of a well-equipped biology laboratory with microscopes, preserved specimens, models, and basic dissection tools.
- Access to digital projection, internet connectivity, and audio-visual aids.
- Compliance with safety standards as per CBSE/state board norms (e.g., fire extinguishers, first aid kit, chemical storage protocols).
- Adequate ventilation, lighting, and ergonomic furniture for students and teacher.

Preferred Enhancements:
- Smart classroom setup with interactive whiteboards and student response systems.
- Dedicated prep room for storing teaching aids and biological specimens.
- Regular access to updated reference materials, journals, and digital resources.
- Collaborative workspace for teachers to plan and review curriculum.

Performance Expectations and Evaluation Criteria

The performance of the PGT Biology teacher will be evaluated annually based on the following criteria:

1. Instructional Delivery (30% weight):
- Adherence to curriculum timeline and completion of syllabus.
- Use of innovative teaching methods and student engagement strategies.
- Integration of co-curricular activities (e.g., science exhibitions, field trips, seminars).
- Average student performance in Class 11 and 12 board examinations (minimum 85% pass rate with 60% scoring above 80%).

2. Student Assessment and Progress (20% weight):
- Timely and accurate conduct of unit tests, mid-term, and final examinations.
- Use of assessment data to inform instruction and provide feedback.
- Implementation of remedial teaching for students scoring below 40% in any assessment.

3. Classroom Management and Discipline (15% weight):
- Maintenance of a positive, orderly, and inclusive learning environment.
- Zero tolerance for bullying, discrimination, or harassment.
- Compliance with school attendance and punctuality policies.

4. Professional Development and Collaboration (15% weight):
- Participation in at least two professional development programs per academic year.
- Active contribution to subject department meetings and curriculum planning.
- Mentoring of junior teachers or student teachers (if applicable).

5. Compliance and Ethics (20% weight):
- Adherence to all statutory and regulatory requirements.
- Accurate record-keeping of lesson plans, attendance, marks, and reports.
- Timely submission of academic reports and student progress records to the school administration.

Failure to meet performance benchmarks may result in performance improvement plans or disciplinary action, up to and including termination, in accordance with the school’s HR policy and labor laws.

Salary and Compensation

The salary structure for the PGT Biology teacher shall be as follows:

- Basic Pay: INR 35,000 per month
- House Rent Allowance (HRA): INR 10,500 per month (30% of basic, as per government norms)
- Transport Allowance: INR 2,000 per month
- Medical Allowance: INR 1,500 per month
- Professional Development Allowance: INR 1,000 per month
- Annual Bonus: One month’s basic pay, disbursed in December
- Performance Incentive: Up to INR 5,000 per year, based on annual evaluation

Gross Annual Salary: INR 630,000
Net Annual Salary (approx.): INR 575,000 (subject to applicable taxes and deductions)

Salary revisions may occur annually
