About Khaskenda Saraswati Sishu Mandir

When I first stepped through the gate of Khaskenda Saraswati Sishu Mandir in Jamuria, the building seemed modest but the buzz inside was unmistakable. The morning assembly, with its rhythmic chant of the national anthem and a quick roundup of the day's announcements, felt like a familiar rhythm that soon became the backdrop of my days. In those early years, the classrooms were bright, the walls adorned with colorful charts of alphabets and numbers, and the teachers—most of them locals who had studied at prestigious institutions—took the time to learn each child's name, the way we liked to draw, and even the little habits that made us unique.

As I moved from the primary wing to the middle school, the academic environment grew more demanding but also more inviting. The science lab, a modest space with a few microscopes and a set of beakers, turned abstract concepts into hands‑on experiments that sparked curiosity. Our mathematics teacher, Mr. Banerjee, would pause after a tough problem and ask us to explain the steps aloud, turning the whole class into a collaborative problem‑solving group. The library, though not huge, held a collection of books in both English and Bengali, and I remember spending rainy afternoons curled up in a corner, flipping through stories that widened my view beyond the coal mines and factories that dominate much of Paschim Bardhaman.

By the time I reached the senior classes, the school had become a place where the pressures of CBSE board exams were balanced with opportunities to explore music, debate, and football on the modest field near the back. Teachers who had watched us grow from shy first‑graders to confident young adults began to act more like mentors, offering advice about college applications and even arranging visits to nearby colleges. The emphasis was never on rote memorisation alone; rather, it was about learning to think, to question, and to apply knowledge in real situations, whether that meant a group project on local environmental issues or a presentation on the history of West Bengal.

Looking back, Kh
